Explanation of Swan Educational Center, Global
Here's some background for you:
I have been the director of this non-profit for nearly 40 years. It
started as a private school in 1986 when I felt inspired to develop some
“tools for independent learning". My students had so much fun and learned
everything so quickly. Although they learned ALL of the same subject
matter as in the public schools, they did it in amazingly creative and fun ways.
One thing we did a lot was to visit businesses. I had the owner/manager talk to
the students (ages 5-15) about how their business was run and all the stuff they
had to do and think about and take care of to make the business a success.
Over the years we perfected the original methods and added many more, developing into a sought-after
hands on, experiential school where youth participated in Real World activities...one year we were invited
to perform a “mock presentation of an actual environmental bill” at the state capital in the REAL-LIFE
legislative chambers…the students were required to learn the Bill of Rights before our trip to Sacramento.
After 12 years as a private school, we became a non-profit educational organization
whose purpose was to develop and implement creative methods of education so that
ALL people could be given the greatest opportunities to learn at their highest level
of potential. Our students blossomed....and also had FUN! We began giving workshops
to groups, schools and sometimes WHOLE SCHOOL DISTRICTS with hundreds of
participants, including students, parents, administrators and community members.
When I began teaching in the inner city “ghetto” of Baltimore, MD (located across the street
from the city jail), my first principal told me "Always remember that you are teaching children, not grades
or subjects". So after the non-profit was started, we abandoned grades and subjects, replacing them with
Five Focus Areas:
*Healing Arts * Performing Arts * Math/Science/Art * Adventure * Survival*
People of all ages now come for our program. First we ask them what they LOVE to do.
If they don't know, we help them discover their "passion". Then they choose a Focus Area taking classes
that are offered in all of the subject areas….The main topic of each lesson remains within the Focus Area
that each individual loves in order to allow each subject to be introduced from a place of familiarity,
rather than a place that is foreign to that person’s brain functioning.
For instance, if an individual loves Art...then we teach that person mathematics from an artistic
Perspective… a) how to mix paints or b) perspective in drawing and its mathematical application in other
fields of study as well....or c) help them learn to choose just the right colors (yes of course from their
intuition, but also showing them the logical internal functions of the brain and the physics of eye/brain
connection that will help them use those internal abilities as well...or better) we would do a play and the
emerging actors would learn that math can help them understand things about theater talents, like "talking
and not talking" are opposites that allow a group of people to communicate so that everyone can be heard,
or the math of movement which allows us the opposite---non-movement--- as an ability to stand in just
the right place in order to help the audience best enjoy their character and still be able to see all the other
Sometimes we mistake our well-learned abilities for “intuition”….which in a lot of cases is actually just a
well-learned skill so that the person doing the task no longer has to think carefully about each step…it just
flows, like with a well-honed sportsperson.
We now have "Modules" that can be purchased as a whole or in pieces.
We offer this model of education on-line. Many individuals and organizations who recognize the benefits
of individualized/creative teaching and learning are responding from around the globe.
We will soon choose 12 people around the world to be “Regional Managers”. The managers will get
trained to use the tools in all of the different modules...and then train others to use them. They will
advertise in their region, offering workshops or training programs to individuals or educational programs
or schools...whatever works best in their area. They will hold workshops (or train people individually) in
whatever modules are requested. Our United States team will be available for questions which come up as
well as on-going training for managers.
The uniqueness of our program is that everyone starts with their passion and is taught everything from the
perspective of that passion. The tools help people become independent learners, also learning the skills to
effectively know when and how to ask for help when they need it. The managers will also make sure that
there are people from our organization available to support the expansion of our clients’ understanding of
how to learn things in enjoyable and uniquely individualized ways.
